JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A Cambria County doctor was sentenced Monday for the role investigators say he played in the death of a former patient.
Authorities say 65-year-old Richard Green, of Windber, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of involuntary manslaughter in October.
They say he also pleaded guilty to violating the “provider prohibited acts” section of Title 62 of the Pennsylvania Crimes Code.
Green was originally charged with one count of Drug Delivery Resulting in Death; one count of Delivery by Practitioner in violation of the Controlled Substances, Drug, Device and Cosmetic Act; one count of Involuntary Manslaughter, and related charges, according to investigators.
Court officials say Green was sentenced to nine to 23 months in prison, but the judge granted him automatic parole after 9 months and is allowing him to serve the term as house arrest provided he pays the associated fees in advance.
Investigators with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office charged Green in April after they say one of his patients was found dead in a hotel May 28, 2018.
Autopsy and toxicology reports showed that she had died from acute drug toxicity caused by Oxycodone, Alprazolam and Quetiapine which investigators say were prescribed by Green.
Investigators said Green knew his patient was a recovering alcoholic, had mental health issues and had overdosed four times before her death.
They said three of her overdoses were from substances that Green had prescribed her, even though he knew she was misusing her prescriptions he prescribed.
